Resolution: The Nest Cam records at 1080P resolution 24/7 continuously while the Ring Cam records at 720P when motion is detected. Nest’s higher resolution provides better picture quality than what you get from Ring.
Power and placement: The Nest Cam is able to record continuously 24/7 because it is plugged directly into a standard AC outlet and doesn’t have a battery that needs to be charged. The down side to this is that you have a power cable that runs from the camera and plugs into an outlet. Your placement of the Nest Cam may be restricted based on the locations of your power outlets around your home. The Ring Cam records when motion is detected, which you can customize in the settings. Because it is not recording continuously, it runs off of an internal rechargeable battery. The benefit to this is that there is no wire or power outlet to deal with. You detach the Ring Cam from its mount and charge it from either the USB port on your computer or even the USB charger for your phone.
Night Vision: Each of these cameras has night vision capabilities but the Nest Cam’s picture at night is much better.
General: Each of the cams can be viewed with their free apps and both are extremely easy to use. Each app allows you to see the live feed from each cam in real time and even allows you to hear what is going on as well. You can even talk through each of cameras like an intercom through the app…very cool!
Cost: Each company has cloud-based storage that allows for off-site archiving for a fee. Ring’s cloud storage fee is cheaper than Nest’s. For my Nest recordings I pay $15 total for 24/7 footage in 1080P for 10 days for both of my cams. My coworker pays $6 for two Ring cameras for 1 month of recordings in 720P.
So as you can see, each company’s camera has its pros and cons. You just need to ask yourself what features are important you and make the decision based on that.
