LG OLED TV San Diego
The year was 1990 and working at Sears in their "Brand Central" area was the mark of success for a young, commissioned salesperson. What was not the mark of success was selling any of Sears' Goldstar product which was low-paying, had a miniscule number of features and was most likely a "boomerang" which meant it was being returned. Goldstar represented zero joy and the future was bleak.
Fast-forward to 1995...a member of the managing in-Hwoi family showed remarkable presence and foresight and changed the name of "Lucky Goldstar" ("Lucky" was another company held under the fold of the in-Hwoi family) to LG. This led to a new focus on product development and creating higher-end, innovative electronics for the mid-market. In our industry, LG's HUGE contribution was the creation of OLED TVs.
OLED TV
Although OLED wasn't created by LG (this was Kodak in 1987), LG really brought this technology to the masses. Earlier introductions of OLED TVs didn't pan out (Sony marketed a whopping 11" screen for $2500.00). It was LG in 2010 and 2012 with their introductions of 15" and then 55" screens that brought LG to the market and to the masses.
OLED is short for for "organic light-emitting diode." In simple terms, this means that every single pixel that makes up the picture illuminates. When the television is switched on, millions of thin, flexible and incredibly small diodes light up to create a viewing experience like no other. When there is a black scene, these pixels can turn completely OFF. This is different from standard LED TVs as they house a small amount of light energy when they reproduce black. Therefore...OLED = pure black. LED = almost black.
This technology delivers striking contrast that shows perfect blacks, infinite contrast and a picture that really "pops" off the screen. This remarkable technology literally changed the TV industry as it was the best picture that we had seen at the consumer level.
