YouTube TV vs Cable

YouTube TV, Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, Fubo, Sling oh MY! Everyone is talking about cutting the cord from cable...but do you want to? The big player in the streaming space is YouTube TV. YouTube TV can be cool (Disclaimer: I am currently using it and will cancel once football season is done) BUT there are some definite drawbacks when comparing it to cable or satellite. Here are some pros-and-cons of getting rid of cable or satellite TV in 2025!

Pros of getting rid of cable or satellite (DirecTV or Dish)

1 - It can be cheaper, especially if you have a lot of TVs.

2 - Use your phone or tablet to watch TV...cool! You have this option with most streaming platforms. Cable TV...not so much.

3 - You can use your subscription in non-local areas. On vacation? It's great to watch some football when the local TV gets 2 channels.

4 - Some cable companies offer a streaming solution (ex: Spectrum with their app) but in many cases, like Spectrum's, the app is BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. (2nd Disclaimer: I realize that the word BOO with 18 "O"s is vague. I can go into detail if needed).

Cons of getting rid of cable (DirecTV or Dish)

1 - No direct key access or channel UP and DOWN...booooooo. This is a bummer if you are a channel surfer or like the ease of going from channel 8 to channel 126 by pushing 1-2-6. Can't do that with YouTube TV.

2 - Streaming devices and services are generally not as reliable as cable TV. In many cases, you are relying on a cheapy streaming device that doesn't handle heat or corrections well. Cable boxes and satellite boxes do much better in ths regard.

3 - Streaming normally is not as intuitive and can be clumsy. Want to watch what is normally channel 35 from your cable on streaming? Good luck hunting it down on streaming platforms. One streaming app uses the left arrow as the GUIDE...but there is nothing that points to this or provides this info. "Odd" says I. With cable or satellite, GUIDE = GUIDE...no crazy left arrows from nowhere.

4 - Cable has free offerings you may not be aware of. See in the video my example about the movie "Miller's Crossing".

5 - Got a system issue? There is VERY little tech support with most streaming apps. With cable or satellite, you pick up a phone and get a human unless it is March of 2020 and we are knee-deep in the pandemic.

See below for important chapters in our video. Our cut the cord video goes over all of the above in depth!

As you can see, being a cord-cutter and picking cable TV vs Youtube TV can be a difficult decision, especially with all of the misinformation out there. If you aren't a techy human being, we normally would guide you toward sticking with cable TV or satellite TV. If your middle name is "Poindexter", YouTube TV may be a good selection. However, armed with this video and your remote control, you should be able to make the right choice for you.
